Anchor for the Soul

Recently there have been MANY prayer requests sent in to Mecklenburg Community Church about individuals facing life threatening illnesses.  The stories are each different but they do have a common thread that runs through them.  The stories that come in concern cancer, kidney failure, depression, suicidal thoughts, tumors, etc.  It is amazing how life can change so suddenly.  How we can be going about our daily life, checking off items on our to-do list, going to work, and then something occurs and everything else that seemed to consume our time is put on the "back burner" for the situation that requires all the time and energy we can give.

The common thread through these stories is the interplay (or war) between HOPE and FEAR.  In each story one can hear how fear has overshadowed the person or how hope is lifting them up.  In my experience it is rarely one or the other completely but something that changes with the waves of emotions that come based on the current experience (i.e. last phone call from the doctor's office).

I recently learned about a story where a woman was so afraid about the possible test results that could come back from the doctor pertaining to someone she loves very much.  The woman stated that she was becoming angrier and more fearful with each passing moment.  She stated that she was praying about how angry she was and then about how afraid she was to God.  She was "venting" to God and she said to God, "I cannot take care of EVERYTHING; I wish someone would take care of all of this and me".  Then she stated that she heard very clearly (not audibly but within her), "I will take care of everything and you".  Instantly she felt peace.  Instantly she was steadied.  Instantly HOPE won.

If you are a Christ follower my guess is you understand what happened to this woman.  My guess is that you have your own stories that are similar.  If you are not a Christ follower hopefully these words will help explain what took place:

We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secureHebrews 6:19 (NIV)

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13 (NIV)
